On October 8, 2019, Caring Hands International (CHI) commemorated the International Day for the Elderly at Joint Heirs Coop Building, Capital Area, Osogbo. Despite heavy rainfall, the event recorded an impressive turnout of over 100 attendees, demonstrating the strong commitment of the community to honoring and supporting older persons. The celebration featured a variety of programs aimed at promoting health awareness, preventive care, and overall well-being among the elderly.

Health Checkups and Medical Screenings

One of the key highlights of the event was a comprehensive health screening program, which included:

  • Blood Pressure Checks: To detect hypertension and other cardiovascular concerns.
  • Urine Testing for Glucose and Protein: To assess early signs of diabetes and kidney-related conditions.
  • Weight Assessment: To detect underlying health conditions that may require medical attention.

In addition, screening for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) was carried out in collaboration with LAUTECH NIMELSA. Most participants tested negative, while two individuals who tested positive were promptly linked to a healthcare facility for further medical evaluation and treatment. Those who tested negative received Hepatitis B vaccinations as a preventive measure.

Educational Lecture on Hepatitis and Immunization

A major educational session was delivered by Mr. Tijani, Head of the Hematology Department, who provided valuable insights on Hepatitis and the importance of immunization. Key points discussed included:

  1. Hepatitis is not hereditary but can be detected through proper testing.
  2. It cannot be diagnosed merely by physical observation.
  3. Transmission occurs through contaminated blood transfusions, organ transplants, and unsterilized needles.
  4. Hepatitis can also be contracted through sexual intercourse with an infected person.
  5. The disease can spread through fecal-oral routes via contaminated water.
  6. Exposure to infected bodily fluids in open wounds can also lead to transmission.

Distinguished Guests in Attendance

The event was honored by the presence of notable personalities, including:

  • Dr. Gbenga Adepoju – Medical Director of Public Health
  • Mr. Ejalonibu – President of NETNOS
  • Engr. Dr. Ayo Obilomo
  • Mr. Oyegbade Hamid – Past President of the Correspondents’ Chapel
